Eileen has been involved in fine enameling for 35 years, has a Master of Arts from the University of Connecticut, has studied with many famous enamelists in the US and in addition, has studied at London Guildhall in England. She loves the opportunity to study with both American and international artists, through membership in The Enamelist Society, an international guild of enamelists and enthusiasts of all things enamel. While Eileen has made many beautiful works in jewelry and object d’art, her favorite form is panel work and making functional objects (switch plate covers, bowls), and particularly loves beautiful abstractions of the ancient technique of Raku. There are of course many techniques used in making an enamel, Eileen admits to enjoying those and some which are a bit ‘in the twilight zone’. Eileen belongs to The Guild of Enamellers of the United Kingdom and she prides herself on being involved in many an enameling group in the USA. Eileen loves dogs and has a life goal to portray in enamels, one image of each type of terrier breed (and there are a lot of them!). Recording the processes of experienced and famous enamelists for the benefit of developing artists has been the brainchild of Eileen.

Kathryn’s wild-hearted love of adventure lead her to a BA in International Business, which took her to many lands. In many lovely, exotic places, she fell in love with jewelry and art from other cultures, particularly enamels. Those interests flowered into a jewelry store, and spurred a series of educational endeavors that focused into certifications as a Graduate Gemologist, GIA; Jewelry Insurance Appraiser; Art Jewelry Maker; and eventually to become a Videographer. This last skill has made it possible to document the dying techniques, genius methods, and craft of making enamel pieces in a small studio. She considers this information as national treasures of information that we as artists do not want to lose.

With admiration and amazement at the work performed by the artists we have filmed, we present to you our first series by Dave Berfield on how to enamel on steel– in large sizes (with glimpses of a kiln Dave made himself that is big enough to walk into), and with the work of many more artists to be offered in the near future.
